What is Reiki? –
Reiki is a Japanese
word meaning Universal Life Force energy. It is an ancient Japanese hands-on
healing modality based on the transference of vital energy. Applying Reiki
is as simple as placing the hands on oneself or another, transferring
'KI' to the recipient. Anyone can learn this healing art. All that is
required is a desire to learn and the attunment (initiation) from a qualified
Reiki instructor. Attunment into Reiki is a step, as this allows the alignment
with the Reiki frequency. With this alignment our energy merges with the
Reiki energy and we become a conduit or channel, much like a radio being
tuned to a station. With this opening the person has the energy available
and it can then be applied for the healing effects to numerous situations.
Reiki is applied via the
hands. The practioner simply places their hands on the corresponding chakras,
meridians and organs, tranferring healing to the recipient. The result
is a deeply relaxing experience for both the healer and the person receiving.
No movement is required when giving a treatment as it is a passive form
of energy work. It is also not necessary to remove clothing or to fix
the mind in deep focus to achieve it's healing effects. Some of the immediate
benefits from a session are reduced stress levels, inner peace, and deep
rest.
Reiki incorporates a number
of practical healing techniques, which are easy and effective in their
application and methodology.
Reiki is an excellent
tequnique for stress management, as well as being a complimentary treatment
to western Allopathic Medicine. The transference of Reiki healing actually
increases the bodies natural ability to heal itself. Energy is the foundation
of all life, so it makes sense that if we have more energy constantly
available to us, we gradually enhance our health and personal well being.

The Ancient Knowledge of Reiki –
Although the word Reiki
comes from Japanese - Ki meaning energy and rei meaning
universal - the healing techniques that are said to eminate from
the life energy it draws from are common to many ancient cultures - Tibetan,
Chinese, Roman, Egyptian, Greek, Indian to name a few.
In ancient cultures
knowledge of, or mastery of, Reiki - or it's linguistic equivilents
- was limited
to priests or spiritual leaders, who passed it on to disciples by word
of mouth and/or by cryptic language or symbols.
Awareness of this
mystical/spiritual knowledge might have been lost but for rediscovery
last century in ancient
Sanskrit manuscripts by Dr. Mikao Usui. Questing as
a Christian to try and learn more about Jesus' healing powers, which
he
subsequently practised on the ill and oppressed in Kyoto.
Exponents of Reiki
hold that
"Reiki Masters" - who have made themselves an open "channel" for Reiki
- can apply the life energies that pervade all living things to individuals
who are ill.
Hawayo Takata
(1900 - 1980), a woman whose illness healed following Reiki therapy in
Japan in 1935, is resposible for teaching Reiki masters now living in
North America.
